Bing will be simplifying performance reporting by removing a few columns in the ‘Share of Voice’ report.
As you may have noticed that in the past few months, Bing rolled out several AI-powered features to improve the performance reporting experience, e.g., the enhanced overview impression share metrics in the Competition Tab.
This addition of new features has rendered at least three columns in the ‘Share of Voice’  report useless. Bing would be removing those three columns in the next few months.
Those columns are:

  • Impression share lost to ad relevance
  • Impression share lost to expected CTR
  • Impression share lost to bid

On the other hand, three columns (impression share, impression share lost to budget, and impression share lost to rank) will remain intact.
The idea behind this step is to simplify the reporting process and to encourage advertisers to use the newer features that Bing introduced recently.
The announcement said, “We hope this update simplifies your reporting process, helping you to save time so you can focus on understanding your competitive landscape and leveraging the other valuable insights available.”
In the announcement, Bing also reminded their advertisers to check out Performance Targets.
Performance Targets, as you may know, allows you to set targets on groups of campaigns and track their performance.
In case you have any questions about the update on Bing Ads in general, you can reach out to their support team. You can also use the Bing Ads Feature Suggestion Forum if you have any ideas you’d like to share with Bing.

When we talk about search engine optimisation, we right away think about optimising websites for Google.

There is no doubt that Google is by far the biggest search engine out there. For most websites and online businesses, more than 75% of organic traffic comes from Google. However, it does not mean that you should completely forget about other major search engines.

One of those other big names is Bing.

And in this article, we share a few tips with you that will help you optimise your website content for Bing. By doing a bit more work optimising your website and web pages for Bing, you will be able to get additional free search engine traffic.

Here are four differences between optimising for Google vs. optimising for Bing.

1. Keywords

Google and Bing treat keywords and keyword optimisation slightly differently. Simply put, Google relies heavily in understanding searcher intent and the contextual meaning behind every search.

This is why with Google searchers do not always have to use the exact keywords to find their desired content. In other words, your content may appear in the search engine results pages for keywords that you might not have specifically used.

On the other hand, Bing wants webmasters to be as specific as possible with keywords. Bing does want content marketers and publishers to include specific keywords that they want to rank for.

What it means is that some of your content may appear in Google search engine results pages for certain keywords. However, those web pages may not appear for some keywords in Bing because you didn’t include those specific keywords in the web pages.

Therefore, if you want to rank for specific keywords in Bing, make sure to explicitly include them in your web pages.

2. The Importance of Meta Keywords

Meta keywords have been a matter of debate for quite some time now.

Some believe that they matter in search engine rankings and, therefore, must be included. Others believe that meta keywords do not matter anymore, and whether you use them or not does not really make a difference in the search engine rankings.

Here’s why.

Google has confirmed that meta keywords do not matter in their search engine rankings. But Bing has revealed that adding meta keywords into web pages have a big impact in improving search engine rankings.

In short, meta keyword isn’t a ranking signal for Google. However, it is for Bing.

3. Social Signals

Google has confirmed that social signals do not play any role in determining a website’s search engine ranking. However, SEO experts have long speculated that despite Google’s denying there is still some association between the two.

Bing, however, does not leave any room for speculations because it has clearly explained that social signals do have “an impact on how you rank organically in the long run.”

So, if you want to rank on Google, you may or may not have to pay attention to social signals (engagement on social media websites, Facebook shares, Retweets, etc.). But these are important factors when it comes to optimising your website for Bing.

4. Multimedia Content

Here is an aspect where Bing has the lead on Google.

As you must know, Google does not have the capability to properly understand and interpret visual content, like videos and images. Instead, it relies on the ‘alt text’ you provide for understanding what an image is about.

On the other hand, Bing can accurately crawl and understand videos, audio files, and images. In fact, Bing can also crawl Flash websites.

This opens up new doors for opportunities when you are optimising content for Bing.

It does not mean that you should just create a Flash website (because that is not the best way to go). But you can leverage audio files, videos files, and images for ranking in Bing’s search engine results pages, which isn’t currently possible with Google.

Final Words

As you can see, most of the ranking factors for both search engines overlap a lot. However, there are still some small differences.

By making small changes, like focusing on social signals and adding meta keywords, you can also rank highly in Bing’s SERPs and get additional free organic traffic.

Bing Ads Editor latest update release, version 11.10, brings a host of much-awaited fixes and new features that come as a sigh of relief for paid advertisers.

The latest update does the following three things:

  • With the latest update, advertisers can now manage review extensions in bulk.
  • The frustrating keyword import problem has been resolved. Now the editor fully recognizes the different match types.
  • Audience association for remarketing now has options for bid modifier.

Let’s discuss these changes in detail.

1. Review Extensions

When handling review extensions, paid advertisers will now no longer have to deal with the web version, as the Bing Ads Editor now fully supports review extensions.

Now advertisers can use the Bing Ads Editor to manage third-party reviews, implementing shared Review Extensions, and can assign reviews to multiple campaigns and ad groups. Up to 20 review extensions can be associated with each campaign and ad group.

2. Keyword Import Fix

Before the latest update release, the Bing Ads Editor could not properly recognize symbols for phrase and exact matches when importing keywords.

Thankfully, the problem is now fixed with the latest update.

For instance, earlier, when you used to import keywords, such as “flower shop” and [flower shop], the editor would treat the imported keywords as ‘Broad Match’ — which was wrong.

Now, after the release, the editor recognizes the symbols correctly and imports the correct match type. So, now, the above keywords will be imported as ‘Phrase Match’ and ‘Exact Match’ respectively.

3. Remarketing Audience Bidding

After the latest update, advertisers can now adjust bid modifiers during the creation of an audience association. It used to be a big hassle before when advertisers would have to go the web version to assign bid adjustments.

As you can see the following screenshot, the bid adjustment column will be pre-populated with 15%. However, marketers now have the option of adjusting bids anywhere from -90% to +900%.

Ladies and gentlemen, fasten your seat-belts. We may be facing another huge mobile-friendly ranking algorithm update — this time by Bing.

Although there has not been any official announcement by Bing or by any other credible source, various updates across the web are hinting that Bing may introduce a mobile-friendly ranking algorithm just like Google has today on April 21st, 2015.

Why Are We Suspecting This?

A good question, indeed.

As I said earlier, there are a few hints that suggest this may be happening sooner rather than later.

First of all, and you might not have even noticed this, but Bing has quietly slipped in a “mobile-friendly label” in its search engine results to the websites Bing thinks have a really good mobile-friendly experience for their users.

See the following image. You will notice a “mobile friendly label” on the left side.

Bing moble friendly SEO algorithm

This indicates that Bing now has a proven method to accurately identify which websites are offering a mobile-friendly user-experience. How long does it take before Bing starts ranking those websites in accordance with that user-friendly mobile experience?

Secondly, Bing has also completely revamped their homepage for mobile devices. According to Bing, it is a “significant redesign”.

The interface of that homepage is now swipeable up or down. Moreover, it also offers quicker searching capabilities to the users.

With so much attention for mobile SEO, mobile-friendly labels, and mobile homepage designs, there is enough evidence to suspect that Bing will be introducing a mobile-friendly ranking algorithm very soon.

If you remember, Google also had a very similar strategy.

Google announced their own mobile-friendly label last year. And now, on April 21st, 2015, it is going to roll out one of their biggest mobile-friendly ranking algorithm update.

If inspiration is anything, be prepared to see a similar ranking algorithm update by Bing in due course.

Bing goes big …

According to recent developments, Bing has started to show only one page of search results in some of its long-tail queries.

Where are the rest of the thousands of pages? They are hidden, as Bing believes “they are of lower-quality and, therefore, should be omitted”.

This is a big development. And if this new trend becomes successful across different search engine platforms, search engine optimisation will never be same again.

For now, Bing has started to remove navigation to additional search results for long-tail queries. If you search a long-tail keyword on Bing, you may get only a single page of search engine results — the results which Bing believe are the most relevant and useful.

The concept behind this massive change is to provide its users the required information in a minimalist way, and not to confuse the users with thousands of irrelevant pages. When it comes to long-tail queries, Bing automatically filters the search results and only present the top 10 best-matched pages.

But at the same time, it also indicates the confidence Bing has in its algorithm. They are so sure of their top 10 long-tail search results that they are omitting the rest of them.

Here is how the results page will look:

Bing May Remove Navigation to Page 2 Search Results

The above image shows the normal search engine result page — with links to additional search engine results.

The following image shows the new way of Bing’s search engine page with no pagination in the end.

Bing May Remove Navigation to Page 2 Search Results 2

To be honest and fair, Bing still does have a “See all results” link. But they do not have the pagination anymore.

First of all, as mentioned earlier, it shows Bing’s immense confidence in its search engine results. Secondly, it diminishes the chances of other web pages — which are not ranked on the 1st page — receiving organic traffic from Bing.

As an online business, if you are ranking for a long-tail keyword on Bing, you might want to put in some extra efforts to be in the top 10. Otherwise, you will see a huge loss of traffic.

For now, it is not a big issue. But let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.

In the long run, if this trend continues to short-keyword queries,  websites will have no chance of receiving organic traffic if they are not in the top 10. But for now, this looks unlikely to be used for every search query.
